# Adding a Manual Journal Entry

> Post a balanced double-entry journal for anything that didn't come through a bank feed or upload

Ezyiah runs on double entry accounting, so instead of adding a single manual transaction, you post a **journal entry**: at least two lines that debit and credit different accounts, with the entry balancing to zero before it can be posted.

Use this for cash transactions, adjusting entries, opening balances, or anything else that didn't come through a bank feed or an uploaded statement.

## Step by step

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the journal entry form">
    From the Chart of Accounts screen, click **Add Journal** in the top right corner. The New Journal Entry form opens.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter the journal details">
    * **Journal Date** — the date of the transaction, in DD/MM/YYYY format
    * **Reference No.** (optional) — an invoice, receipt, or internal reference number
    * **Description** (optional) — a note covering what the journal is for
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add the journal lines">
    Each line needs an account, an optional description, and either a debit or a credit amount, not both. Ezyiah calculates the **GST** and **Net** columns from the amount and the account's GST treatment.

    Click **+ Journal Line** to add as many lines as the entry needs. A simple journal only needs two lines, but you can add more to split an amount across several accounts.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Balance the entry">
    The panel on the right tracks **Total Debits**, **Total Credits**, **Total Tax**, and **Entry balance** as you type. The entry balance must reach **\$0.00** before you can post, since total debits and total credits have to match.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Post the journal">
    Once the entry balances, click **Post Journal**. The transactions are added to the Chart of Accounts and included in your BAS, P\&L, and other reports.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>
  If your entry won't balance, check that you haven't entered an amount as both a debit and a credit on the same line, and that the GST treatment on each account matches what you intend for that transaction.
