# Adding an Asset

> Add a fixed asset and see its depreciation calculated automatically

The **Depreciation** section under a client tracks fixed assets and generates a full depreciation schedule for each one. Adding an asset here is what drives that schedule, so the details entered at this step carry through to every year Ezyiah calculates.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Depreciation">
    With a client selected, click **Depreciation** in the left sidebar. If no assets have been added yet, you will see a **No Assets Found** state. Click **Add Your First Asset** to open the Add New Asset dialog. Once a client has at least one asset, this same dialog opens from the **Add Asset** button in the top right of the Depreciation list instead.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter the asset name and category">
    Enter an **Asset Name** your team will recognise at a glance, then open the **Category** dropdown and select the type of asset it is.
  </Step>

    Enter the **Total Cost** of the asset and its **Acq Cost**, the acquisition cost used as the basis for depreciation. **GST** is optional and can be left blank if it does not apply.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the rate of depreciation and any private use deduction">
    Enter the **Rate of Depreciation** as a percentage. If the asset has some private use that should be excluded from the deductible amount, enter that percentage under **Private Deduct**. This field is optional and can be left blank for assets that are entirely for business use.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the acquisition date and effective life">
    Enter the **Acquisition Date** in DD/MM/YYYY format and the asset's **Effective Life** in years.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Select a depreciation method">

  </Step>

  <Step title="Mark disposal if relevant">
    If the asset has already been disposed of, tick the **Disposal** checkbox. Leave this unticked for an active asset still in use.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save the asset">
    Click **Save**. The dialog closes and the asset appears as a new row in the Depreciation list, showing its acquired date, category, cost, method, private use percentage, and deductible amount for the current year.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Viewing the depreciation schedule

Click the row for any asset to expand its full **Depreciation Schedule**. Each row in the schedule covers one financial year and shows the Opening Value, Depreciation for that year, the Deductible portion after any private use adjustment, the Closing Value carried into the next year, and the Accumulated depreciation to date. Ezyiah generates this schedule automatically once the asset is saved, projecting forward each year until the asset's effective life is complete.
